ENVELOP To Install 3D Sound Platform At Further Future Festival 002
In 2015, a group of audiophile tech-junkies in San Francisco launched a rapidly successful Kickstarter campaign for their 3D immersive sound platform named ENVELOP. Their goal was to create a new, encapsulating, audiovisual experience that would transcend todays stereo — two speaker — approach to music production and listening.
Their 28 speaker, 3D platform is much like surround sound systems we experience in movie theatres and home systems, but now allows artists to incorporate this into their live electronic performances. It uses a full-sphere surround sound mapping technique called ambisonics which includes an above and below source of audio in addition to the horizontal plane.
ENVELOP position themselves as a forward-thinking public initiative; their enterprise is non-profit and open-source, offering their space as an environment to learn, teach, and collaborate. They are developing an artist-in-residency program allowing hands-on access to music producers looking to work in 3D sound.
We found out about ENVELOP while visiting the website of Further Future, a futurist arts festival based in the Las Vegas desert which hosts a weekend of live music and art with discussions on technology, innovation, humanity and the future. Everything we stand for here at Hollagully.
“Dubbed “the Picasso of Sound,” Further Future 001 artist Christopher Willits utilizes meditative ambient electronic music with guitar, immersive audiovisual experiences and landscape photography to paint mesmerizing sound pictures. As the founder of San Francisco creative collective Overlap and a practitioner of meditation, Tai Chi and shamanic works, Christopher aims to create spaces for opening, reflection and transformation. He is currently working on a remarkable 3D sound and light system called ENVELOP. Located at The Midway in San Francisco, this 3D sound studio will be used for hosting immersive audiovisual performances, deep listening events, sound therapy research and educational workshops. Get excited for his ENVELOP mobile installation at FF002.”- Further Future
