The AKG C 214 is a large diaphragm condenser microphone that serves as a cost-effective alternative to their legendary C 414 family. It does so by combining the same 1 inch capsule on an integrated suspension (AKGs Back-Plate Technology) to reduce mechanical noise, resulting in an impressive performance with sonic accuracy similar to the C 414.
If you’re looking for a microphone for singing that will not only help your vocals shine but be a solid performer for any recording application in your home studio, then the AKG C 214 earns a spot at the top of your shortlist.
With a wide variety of features, its large diaphragm edge-terminated cardioid capsule delivers a highly detailed, up-front sound capable of handling 143dB dynamic range—accurately capturing any transient detail thrown at it.
The AKG C 214 has an incredible dynamic range of 20 – 20kHz and can record high-output sources of up to 156dB SPL due to it’s 20dB attenuation pad. Use it in the studio or during live performance on drums, percussion, or horns for an accurate, lush sound.
A switchable low pass filter at 160Hz helps remove unwanted low-frequency rumble while preserving the integrity of the signal. It also help minimize any proximity effect from closely recorded signal.
The capsule is protected by a dent-resistant, double-mesh, metal grill that sits on top of an all-metal die-cast body that ensures high RF immunity. This assures no signals are picked up through computer speakers or cellular data present in the environment. A gold-plated XLR output connect the C214 to your preamp.
The AKG C 214 has a relatively flat frequency response from 60Hz up to 1kHz, giving it an accurate bottom end free from hype. Moving up the frequency spectrum from there we find a few valleys and peaks, relaxing some of the prominent frequencies found in electric guitars while providing some liveliness to where the vocals typically sit. Between 5.5kHz and 13kHz there is a pleasant lift in presence, giving the signal a nice touch of air.
Singers and home studio buffs enjoy the versatility of the AKG C 214. It’s a cardioid condenser microphone for the professional who’s kind of on a budget but is looking to at least go the extra mile to get something that is a cut above the rest in its class. It comes with a carrying case, windscreen and shock mount, making it great for mobile use.
